MUST READ - FROM VERA TO VERUSHCKA: THE MAKING OF A 1960s SUPERMODEL

Verushcka was 'the most beautiful woman in the world' in the 1960s. But as these early pictures show, you'd barely recognise 'Vera' as the sensation she'd soon become.

In 1963 Diana Vreeland, the editor of American Vogue, pinned a photograph of a 23-year-old Prussian countess to a wall and declared, "Veruschka, you're going to hear from me". And Veruschka did. The 6ft model went on to grace the magazine's cover 11 times - photographed often by Richard Avedon, who called her the most beautiful woman in the world - and in the process became one of the fashion world's most recognised names, faces and bodies. But before Veruschka stepped out stridently, imposing her statuesque, She-Ra silhouette on the 1960s, she was known as Vera. Her chrysalis moments were captured over the course of a year in Rome by an Italian photographer, Johnny Moncada.

"From Vera to Veruschka: The Unseen Photographs", by Johnny Moncada, is published by Rizzoli at £47.50
